NHRC Takes Suo Motu Cognizance of Sanitation Worker Deaths in Indore
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report regarding the deaths of two sanitation workers in a sewer chamber in Indore. The deceased workers were employees of the Indore Municipal Corporation.
Indore Sanitation Staff Death
The incident occurred on 2nd March 2026. As per the media report dated 3rd March 2026, the workers had entered a sewer chamber to retrieve a portion of a suction tanker pipe that had fallen inside during a de-watering process. While inside the chamber, they reportedly fell unconscious due to the presence of toxic gases. They were later pulled out and taken to a hospital, where they were declared dead.
Notices Issued by NHRC
The Commission observed that the contents of the news report hinted at possible violations of the human rights of the victims. Following this, the NHRC has issued notices to the Indore Municipal Corporation and the Police Commissioner of Indore. Both authorities have been asked to submit a detailed report within two weeks.
The Commission has sought information on the status of the investigation into the incident. It has also sought details regarding compensation, provided to the kins of the deceased sanitation workers.
